Taylor, Texas

ust 35 miles northeast of Austin (or a quick 30 minute drive) sits Taylor, Texas. The rich soil and the skilled farmers who worked the land in this area made Williamson County a leading cotton producer. This crop has been one of the mainstays of Taylor's economy since the early 1800's. Taylor has a wonderful array of 19th Century buildings that went up after a devastating fire in 1879.

Taylor experienced an influx of settlers from Czechoslovakia and other Slavic states, as well as from Germany and Austria, that helped establish the town. Known for its great Bar-B-Que and Kolache, a slavic pastry, the cuisine in the town reflects the diversity of the residents.

Taylor has all the amenities of the city with the quiet life of a small town: Taylor Municipal Airport, Acute-care Johns Community Hospital, and Temple College Taylor Center (an accredited 2-year college).

Pflugerville, Texas

Pflugerville, the formerly small German farming community has become one of the fastest growing cities in Texas. Just to the north of Austin and to the east of Interstate 35, Pflugerville sits on the flat, expansive land of the Blackland Prairie.

Residents enjoy the pleasant country setting as well as the close proximity to the urban amenities of Austin. Liberty Hill, Texas

In the Texas Hill Country between the forks of the San Gabriel River sits the little city of Liberty Hill.

Surrounded by rivers and lakes, prehistoric limestone cliffs, and wooded hills, Liberty Hill is just fifteen miles west of Georgetown and thirty-three miles northwest of Austin making it a convenient rural community.

A short 8 miles from suburban Round Rock and 20 miles from downtown Austin lies Hutto, the Austin area's newest solution to modern country living. Originally a farming community on the Missouri Pacific railroad, Hutto has undergone a large change in size and status but has managed to keep the appealing rural feel.

With a population of approximately 3,000, this area is growing quickly to accommodate families with a desire to "get away" from the city, yet still be near the action of the Austin nightlife and shopping. Located on the northeastern edge of Austin, Hutto also offers an easy commute to major area employers such as Dell, Motorola, and National Instruments.

Many families choose Hutto for their home due to the impeccable reputation of the Hutto Independent School District, which boasts an "exemplary" rating on its schools by the Texas Education Agency and has a teacher-student ratio of 1:13. With an active sports program, the Hutto Hippos are widely known for their accomplishments.

Leander, Texas

The primarily rural Leander area, 24 miles northwest of Austin, is populated by ranches, country homes on acreage lots and the occasional suburban community. This area appeals to those seeking a small town, family atmosphere who don't mind limited shopping options or lengthier commutes to downtown Austin.

In October, the eagerly anticipated Old Leander Days Festival gets under way. This family oriented celebration features music, food booths, a parade, a chili cook off, exhibitions and a variety of folksy entertainment acts.

For weekend boating, residents enjoy the nearby Lake Travis. Residents of Leander shop in the adjacent Georgetown and Cedar Park areas. Dell Computer and several other major employers are in the nearby Round Rock area.

Cedar Park

The thriving bedroom community of Cedar Park is one of the fastest growing cities in the nation according to the U.S. Census. Situated along the busy commercial corridor of Highway 183, residents have a slow commute to downtown Austin during peak travel times although completion of the new raised sections of Hwy 183 make the commute a little less time consuming.

Nice, comfortable, suburban, sometimes family sized homes and large country homes on acreage lots populate the relatively flat terrain of the state's coastal plain. No major industry is located here but plans are in the works to attract large firms to the area. Shopping amenities are convenient for residents near the highway but less so for those in the outer rural neighborhoods.

Buttercup Creek is situated just off the main thoroughfare. The schools for the children in this community are nearby. Amenities include tennis courts, parks, a swimming pool and basketball courts.

Vista Oaks, built in the mid 1990's, has larger family style homes on wooded lots. Community amenities include a pool, tennis courts and a playground. Professionals, skilled workers and their families call this area home.

Georgetown, Texas

Georgetown, 26 miles to the north of Austin, encompasses not only the city proper but outlying communities and ranches. Population 30,000, Georgetown is the fastest growing city in Williamson County.

Known for its Victorian era storefronts and numerous historic homes the downtown district has old-fashioned charm. Working in partnership with the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the city of Georgetown graduated from the Main Street Project and won the Great American Main Street Award in 1997. In preserving the original character of the older business district, this effort has promoted revitalization of the city. This area is sought after by people who are seeking larger lots, a country setting and a reasonable commute to the Dell complex in Round Rock.

The 1200-acre Lake Georgetown, in the western part of the area, serves as a recreational area for the nearby communities of Fountainwood, Georgetown Village and the golfing community of Berry Creek.

Fountainwood, a pleasant neighborhood of comfortable family homes on acreage lots, backs up to the lake. Evening strolls through the park, biking, camping and fishing add to the appeal. The smaller homes of Georgetown Village are designed to have a quaint, small town look. The elementary school and a heated pool are both situated within the community.

The established Country Club community of Berry Creek is larger and more on the elegant side. Recreational amenities include an 18-hole golf course, a 26,000 ft. full service clubhouse, tennis courts and a pool. This area appeals to younger professionals and their families. Children in the Georgetown Area attend schools in the Georgetown Independent School District.
